Course Summary

This Webinar is designed to provide cultural context, practical advice, and trauma-informed interventions to mental health providers supporting trans & gender-diverse patients before, during, and throughout recovery from gender-affirming surgeries. Drawing upon best practices (including WPATH Standards of Care, version 8), case examples, peer-reviewed studies, and lived experiences, this training will equip clinicians to provide culturally responsive care and support clients through safer, smoother recoveries.

We’re going to talk about…

  • Strategies for assessing and discussing gender-affirming surgery goals with patients considering these interventions, with a focus on body-positivity and self-determination
  • Preparedness to support patients in accessing and preparing for surgery including letters of support and key recommendations from the WPATH Standards of Care, Version 8
  • Familiarity with some common challenges faced during the acute recovery stages, as well as interventions which have proven useful in addressing these
  • Increased repertoire of resources and coping skills to aid in ongoing support and increased community connection throughout the recovery journey.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe 3 common gender-affirming surgical procedures and their expected outcomes
  • Identify 2 factors that help determine a client’s readiness for gender-affirming surgery, and how addressing these factors can improve surgical outcomes and client satisfaction.
  • List 3 post-surgical care strategies that support recovery and enhance the overall well-being of clients who have undergone gender-affirming surgery.
  • Compare and contrast rates of regret for gender affirming surgeries and other surgeries explained in WPATH Standards of Care, Version 8
