Course Summary

Dr. Giammattei will present the underlying framework that therapists who work with transgender or gender diverse (TGD) couples/relationships need to understand to provide gender-affirming treatment. This presentation is a follow-up to the Couples Conference 2024 (CC24) where he shared ways to explore your own hetero/cis-normative beliefs around coupling and how these influence the models you choose, the questions you ask, and the interventions you use. In this webinar, we will quickly run through these concepts for those who did not attend CC24 and dive deeper into how to work with relationships where one or more partners is going through a gender-related transition. While TGD couples experience many of the same issues as other couples, we will explore the minority stress and unique stressors that impact these issues in profound ways. Dr. Giammattei will use experiential exercises and clinical vignettes to discover and utilize the basics of the gender-affirming approach to couple/relationship therapy.

We’re going to talk about…

  • Foundational framework for therapists working with TGD couples/relationships, focusing on awareness of personal hetero/cis-normative beliefs that influence therapeutic approaches.
  • Minority stress and specific challenges affecting TGD couples/relationships, illustrating practical applications through clinical vignettes and experiential exercises.
  • Essential issues crucial for effective gender affirming therapy beyond surface understanding.
  • Insights into integrating gender affirming principles into couple therapy through experiential exercises and real-world examples.
  • We will answer your most pertinent questions about gender affirming care with couples/relationships.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe at least 2 ways to address the impact of personal/clinical bias therapeutically.
  • Identify at least 2 approaches to address hetero/cis-normative practices in traditional couple therapy models.
  • Describe 2 ways the intersections of sexual orientation and gender identity may impact TGD couples/relationships.
  • Identify at least 3 gender-affirmative approaches to address the impact of minority stress on TGD couples/relationships.

Why is this important?

Regardless of the model of couple therapy used, being a gender-affirming couples therapist requires both an understanding of your own gender narratives, the hetero/cisnormativity in your models, as well as the key issues that may impact couples where one or more partners is TGD. It involves moving beyond simply holding a positive view of TGD clients or having some knowledge of the most obvious issues TGD individuals face; while these may be necessary, they are not sufficient even if you consider yourself a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
