Join Dr. Zhou for an insightful and comprehensive workshop on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), also known as Variable Attention Stimulus Trait (VAST), in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. Research indicates that ADHD is significantly more prevalent in TGD communities, with a prevalence rate of 4-21%, or 2-13 times higher than in cisgender populations. Despite this, ADHD often remains underdiagnosed in these communities due to limitations in common screening and assessment methods.
Why is This Important?
In this workshop, Dr. Zhou will delve into the diagnostic criteria for ADHD, providing a detailed assessment process and strategies to distinguish ADHD from other co-occurring mental health conditions. He will highlight the differences in assessment approaches for youth and adults, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the nuances involved.
Participants will gain insights into common medications used to treat ADHD, along with guidance for prescribers. Dr. Zhou will also present psychotherapeutic strategies to support individuals with ADHD. Through case examples, he will illustrate the application of these strategies in real-world scenarios, leaving ample room for questions and discussion.
This workshop is designed for medical and mental health professionals seeking to enhance their understanding and skills in diagnosing and treating ADHD within TGD populations.

Course Curriculum
A. Ning Zhou, MD (he/him/他) is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist at the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), volunteer clinical faculty at UCSF, and in private practice. He completed medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, psychiatry residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and Cornell. At SFDPH, he works at a community clinic serving queer and trans youth, a primary care clinic, and a specialty mental health clinic. He co-facilitates two consultation groups at SFDPH, one focused on gender, and one focused on autism and co-occurring conditions. At UCSF he supervises psychiatry trainees/students and directs the LGBTQ+ Mental Health Area of Distinction. He is a World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Standards of Care 8 Certified Mentor and Member and teaches about neurodiversity for the WPATH Global Education Initiative. In addition, he has a private practice with a focus on serving gender diverse and neurodivergent youth and adults.
