The Monterey Behavioral Health Gender Diversity Training is a comprehensive workshop series designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of medical and mental health professionals, educators, and community members in supporting transgender and gender diverse youth and their families. This series will help participants build a strong foundation in gender literacy, medical support, and developmental understanding of gender, enabling them to provide effective, culturally attuned, gender affirming care. Each of these workshops will provide an invaluable opportunity for professionals to enhance their skills, expand their knowledge, and contribute to a more inclusive and affirming society for all youth. This training begins with four intensive 3-hour sessions held on Thursday afternoons. These sessions will cover crucial topics related to gender diversity and care, integrating perspectives from youth, parents, and families. It will also include content specific to working with monolingual Spanish speaking families.

The Monterey Behavioral Health Gender Care Trainings offers a unique and in-depth learning experience for those dedicated to supporting transgender and gender diverse youth and their families. Through this series, participants will build a strong foundation in gender literacy, medical support, and developmental understanding of gender, enabling them to provide the highest standard of care. By participating in this series, attendees will join a network of individuals dedicated to creating inclusive and affirming environments for all youth, regardless of their gender identity or expression.

As the landscape of gender identity and expression continues to evolve, it is essential for those in supportive roles to stay informed and equipped to address the unique needs of transgender and gender diverse individuals. This workshop series is meticulously crafted to address these needs, offering a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Through interactive sessions and collaborative discussions, participants will delve into critical topics, including gender literacy, medical support, and the developmental journeys of transgender youth and their families. The workshop kicks off with four intensive sessions, each lasting three hours, held on Thursday afternoons. These initial sessions lay the groundwork for understanding and supporting transgender youth by covering essential aspects of language, misinformation, medical interventions, and developmental processes. Following these sessions, monthly follow-up meetings will provide a platform for continued learning, case discussions, and addressing specific participant concerns. Additional in-depth trainings on particular topics will be scheduled as needed, ensuring that participants receive ongoing support and education.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define three key terms related to gender identity and expression. 
  •  Use inclusive language in both English and Spanish in a professional context.  
  • Identify and explain three common forms of misinformation and disinformation related to transgender issues.  
  • Develop and present two strategies for counteracting misinformation in professional practice.  
  • Outline the essential components of Gender Affirming Care (GAC).  
  • Create an action plan for implementing GAC principles within their practice or organization.
  • Describe the medical options available for transgender youth, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy. 
  •  Evaluate case studies to determine appropriate medical support and interventions for transgender youth.  
  • Explain the necessary steps and considerations in the affirmative approach to Gender Health Evaluations for youth and their families.  
  • Explain the developmental journey of transgender youth, including the perspectives of parents, families, and therapists.

This comprehensive course lays the groundwork for understanding the intricacies of gender diversity within clinical supervision and introduces participants to the foundational principles of gender affirming care, ethical considerations, legal frameworks, and the development of a supportive supervisory relationship.

Jen Hastings

Jen Hastings, MD (jen/jen) Board Certified in Family Medicine, has been providing transgender health care for many years. Dr Jen is part of Ibis Reproductive Health, a research group studying the reproductive needs and experiences of transgender and gender expansive people in the US, and a national consultant and educator on transgender healthcare, increasing medical access and understanding. Jen is also an abortion provider with Aria Medical Group. In Santa Cruz, Jen is the physician consultant with SafeRx and the Health Improvement Partnership, working with Opioid Safety, Behavioral Health integration, Trauma Informed Care and Mindfulness in Medicine.

Shawn V Giammattei, PhD

Shawn V. Giammattei, PhD is a clinical psychologist & WPATH certified member/mentor, specializing in couple & family therapy with a particular focus on trans youth and their families. He is the founder & CEO of the Gender Health Training Institute & TransFamily Alliance, a research consultant, international speaker, community educator, and professor teaching graduate and post-graduate courses in LGBTQ psychology, family systems, and gender affirming care, as well as the author of several articles and book chapters on gender, sexuality, and family work.

Juliette Greenham

Mexican writer, former strategy director at international organizations and DEI expert at Gender Health Training Institute. Juliette is coaching the most important organizations in Latin America to change their culture towards trans inclusivity, implementing solid policies and procedures. Juliette helps trans families in their Gender Journey, translating gender-affirming care to the Latin American culture, helping families understand it and remove cultural obstacles so they can flow and be at peace with the process.
